A BRUTAL WINTER

Fear continues to hold the people of North Korea in its grip as hunger and starvation has become a looming reality for the majority of the country. The prices of everyday goods have skyrocketed and many North Koreans are holding onto their foreign currency as a means of security, which has "led to a decrease in the circulation of cash in the local economy." Many merchants refuse to sell their goods until prices rise so they are able to get the highest return. There are regular reports of families starving and dying together in the streets, while "security officials at Musan Station feel like the 'cries of children from cold and hunger are never-ending around the station.'" I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. For I hear the whispering of many--terror on every side!--as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.

But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, 'You are my God.' My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love! Psalm 31:13-16

Father, we pray for the church in North Korean during this brutal winter. Be to them a rock of refuge to which they may continually come (Ps. 71:3). In the same way that You supernaturally provided manna from heaven for Your people, Israel, provide for Your people in North Korea and do not forget Your little ones. Give them strength to endure as they suffer under the cruelty of wicked men. When their physical strength is gone and they are tempted to despair, strengthen them with the food of Your Word; and provide miraculous ways for Your people to encourage one another even under this strict lockdown. We praise You that You "preserve the faithful but abundantly repay the one who acts in pride" (Ps. 31:23b). In the name of Jesus, Amen.
