North Korean laborers crossing a bridge as they head to a construction site.

I heard that one of my colleagues was caught while trying to escape and sent back to North Korea after two days. I understand he couldn't return home. If caught, the person faces imprisonment and the family faces deportation.” (Testimony of a North Korean overseas worker). It is not uncommon for North Korean workers in China who attempt to escape to disappear after being forcibly repatriated. We cannot rule out the possibility that they were sent to re-education camps or political prison camps. Punishment is given not only for escape attempts but also for unauthorized outings, failure to follow work orders, poor attitude, ideological issues, and even the political issues of family members.

“And the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. And in that day his burden will be taken from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken from your fatness.”

Isaiah 10:26-27

Through this Word, we pray that by God’s mighty hand, the dispatch of North Korean overseas workers will stop, and the yoke of surveillance and oppression upon them will be broken. For those in pain without the freedom to access the Word of Life, pour out Your compelling grace, let the light of the Gospel shine upon them, and let hope through God's salvation overflow.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
