A recent report submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council estimates that the prevalence of malnutrition in North Korea averaged 45.5% between 2020 and 2023, indicating that approximately 11.8 million people are currently malnourished. Despite the regime's efforts to increase food production, chronic food insecurity persists due to a combination of aging agricultural infrastructure, poor technology, inadequate investment, and frequent natural disasters. Moreover, the situation has been further aggravated by the government's renewed monopoly over the distribution of essential goods—such as rice and corn—and its suppression of private commercial activities, including the informal markets known as jangmadang.
As it is written,
“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
2 Corinthians 9:9–10
We lift up North Korea in prayer, as it continues to suffer from severe food shortages. Lord, please rescue the North Korean people from this dire reality in which nearly half the population is malnourished and lives are constantly lost to starvation. Open a way for food aid to reach them, and allow support not only for food provision but also for enhancing agricultural productivity.
Above all, may the land and the people of North Korea come under Your blessing, so that the land may yield its harvest and the people may become those who are blessed by the Lord.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
