The BBC released a phone interview with “Jinsu” (alias), a North Korean IT worker. Jinsu is earning more than 5,000 dollars a month by securing remote work from American and European companies while based in China. However, he said, “85% of that money was sent back to North Korea. It felt like robbery, but still it was much better than being in North Korea.” It is reported that North Korea has dispatched thousands of IT workers to China, Russia, and Africa to earn foreign currency, and the amount they remit back to North Korea is estimated at 250 million dollars annually.
“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Psalm 9:9–10
Lord, we lift up these North Korean IT workers who are exploited as tools for foreign currency under a dictatorship. They work like slaves, without fair wages or proper working hours. Have mercy on them, bring their oppression to an end, and stop the development of weapons of destruction in North Korea. While they are abroad, open opportunities for North Korean Overseas Workers to encounter the outside world, hear the Gospel, and receive the blessing of salvation.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
